The Importance of a Summer Internship

A summer internship is a great way to learn about the world of work. And, when you’re done, you may find yourself ready to take the next step in your career.

However, there are some things you should keep in mind when planning your summer internship. Read on to find out what to look for and how to make it a success.

U.S. Politics

The right internship can make a significant difference in your career and provide invaluable experience and connections. Whether you want to work in government, business, nonprofits, journalism, or campaign management, there are a variety of options available to you.

One option is to work as an intern at a federal agency or think tank. These positions typically pay a stipend and include round-trip transportation. Students who are interested in pursuing this opportunity should contact the Office of Post-Graduate Planning and Experiential Education for more information.

Another option is to volunteer with an organization that works on public policy or political campaigns. These positions often involve a great deal of direct contact with the community, and provide students with an excellent opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom.

Students pursuing an internship should consult with their faculty advisor to determine whether they are eligible for credit for the experience. If you are, a faculty sponsor will guide the academic portion of your internship. In addition, students may secure a faculty sponsor to supervise the research component of their internship. This can occur when a faculty member has a specific interest in the subject of the internship (e.g., our Judicial Politics faculty commonly sponsors internships involving legal offices).

In addition to obtaining academic credit for their internship, students should also seek assistance with acquiring the necessary travel and living expenses. The department can help students apply for financial aid through the Wellman Hill Internship Grants Competition.

If you are interested in securing an internship, please complete the POL 89a Internship Form and receive instructor approval before submitting it to the Internship Director. The Internship Director will use this information to determine if you are eligible for Political Science credit and how many credit hours you can earn.

The final step is to enroll in a course, Pol 399, which is taught during the semester in which you complete your internship. During this course, you will read a modest amount of social-science scholarship related to your internship and write reflective papers that connect your job(s) with the scholarly readings.

Internet and Technology

Throughout the summer, a variety of internship opportunities are available to students interested in the internet and technology. Whether you’re looking to work with a government agency or a private organization, there are many ways that you can build your career while contributing to the national debate about how to use technology for public good.

NTIA offers summer internships in legal and policy areas relating to the Internet and other forms of communications and information. These positions provide a unique opportunity for college students to gain a deeper understanding of the issues that shape the future of communication and information technologies, while at the same time contributing directly to NTIA’s work.

For example, NTIA’s Technology Services department provides IT services to the public, private and non-profit sectors of the United States. This internship provides hands-on experience working with a wide range of technologies, including cloud computing, networking and data science.

Research: The Center’s researchers in a number of different research areas focus on the impact of technology and the Internet on society. Interns will be responsible for supporting researchers in all stages of their projects, including developing questionnaires, analyzing survey data, creating data visualizations, writing and preparing publications.

Global Attitudes: The Center’s global attitudes and trends research team focuses on how public opinion is changing around the world. Interns will be involved in the design of international survey projects, the drafting and editing of reports and research papers, and quality control reviews.

Religion: The Center’s researchers in religion and public life study religious change and social hostilities involving religion in the United States and abroad. Interns will help collect and analyze survey and content analysis data on religion in a wide range of countries. They will also assist in analyzing the transcripts of focus groups and in-depth interviews exploring religious identity among religious minorities in the U.S.

Media: The Center’s journalism and media researchers study news and information trends. Interns will be responsible for assisting researchers in all stages of their projects, including assisting with the design of international survey projects, the coding and analyzing of survey and content analysis data, and the writing and drafting of reports and research papers.

Religion

A student may choose to spend a summer internship involving a religion or a religious organization. Internships can take place in the United States or abroad. Students are responsible for completing all necessary paperwork and meeting deadlines to formalize the internship placement.

A summer internship can provide a supervised experience that extends and complements the work done in RLST classes. It can also test and broaden a student’s interests.

There are many types of internships that can be arranged through the College’s Career Center and the Department of Religious Studies. These include a religious studies research internship with an academic or nonprofit institution, a community service internship, or a public interest fellowship.

The internship is a supervised, off-campus experience that can be tailored to fit individual needs and interests. It is a great way to make connections with local organizations, expand your network and build professional skills and experiences.

For the most part, a summer internship in the field of religious studies will involve studying the history and development of religions. This will include analyzing data, conducting interviews, and writing research papers.

Another possibility is to study a religion’s effects on social conflict. This can be through the analysis of a survey of the effects of religion on governmental restrictions or social hostilities in a country, or through research on the impact of different religious traditions on communities.

Some of the most common approaches to defining religion involve monothetic definitions, which are defined by a single criterion that distinguishes it from non-religion. These definitions can be broadly useful, but they can also be problematic.

An alternative approach to defining religion is polythetic, which involves examining instances of the concept for properties that appear in all members of the class. This is the approach that most often traces its roots to Ludwig Wittgenstein (Wittgenstein 1953).

In this approach, a given instance falls under the term when it contains certain defining characteristics, but there is no one-size-fits-all threshold number. Instead, the instances that fall under a specific concept are all similar in a range of ways, a feature that is often called “the family resemblance” and which can be a guiding principle for theories that explain why some people have certain beliefs.

Communications

As a communications/development intern, you will be responsible for supporting the digital and outreach strategies of this nonprofit. This includes developing and maintaining social media channels, coordinating digital content for the organization, conducting outreach events, and fundraising.

You’ll be able to put your skills into practice as you help to plan and execute communication plans, and you can develop your own style while learning about the different aspects of the field.
